Chemical Peels Q & A

What Does a Chemical Peel Do?

A chemical peel is used to remove several layers of damaged skin at one time without surgery or other invasive procedures. Combinations of specific chemicals are used to peel away the outermost layers of the skin leaving behind the fresh, unblemished layers underneath. By removing the damaged layers of skin, the fresh layers underneath are allowed to flourish providing a more youthful, vibrant appearance. If left in place, the damaged layers can deplete vital nutrients that could otherwise be used for the rejuvenation and growth of new skin. While the procedure may cause minor discomfort, the end result is skin that is vibrant, pliable and more youthful looking.

Are Chemical Peels Painful?

Chemical peels involve the removal of the top layers of skin. A chemical substance is applied to the surface of the skin, causing it to blister and, eventually, peel off. Once the top layers have been removed, the fresh skin from underneath is exposed. During the healing process, the fresh skin may be extremely tender and sore. Until the skin creates a protective barrier, similar to that of a scab, the area may be tender to the touch. The discomfort associated with a chemical peel will only last for a few days. It can be accompanied by redness, mild swelling, and other slight irritations of the skin and surrounding tissues.

Are There Any Risks Involved with Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels offer fresher, more youthful looking skin to patients who opt to use them. The procedure can effectively treat fine lines, bags, wrinkles, and skin imperfections that are superficial in nature. Patients who have fair skin and light colored hair often benefit from the skin underneath being a lighter color due to the reduced exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Although it’s rare, individuals with a darker skin tone have a higher risk of the color being uneven after a chemical peel.
